Preston Defeated in Injury Time

MCFC Reserves 2 - 1 PNE Reserves

A rather eventful game against Preston North End was the first Totesport game for City in over a month; re-arranged to be played at Hyde United's Ewen Fields because the floodlights have become so poor at the athletics arena. The game was decided in the ninety second minute when Preston's goalkeeper Andrew Murphy could not keep hold of the ball from substitute Robbie Mak's shot on the left into the far corner of the goal.

The other two goals coming from the penalty spot; Preston opening the scoring from Adam Barton in the first half and Jack Redshaw restored parity in the second half.

The game was delayed about ten minutes due to the teams slightly late arrival and it was delayed further in the fourth minute when Abdi Ibrahim suffered soft tissue damage to his left knee and was stretchered off.

City then appeared to have a decent goal ruled offside as the player had run from behind the defence in the fifteenth minute. Only moments later substitute Dedryck Boyata was bundled off the pitch and appeared to hit his head on the brick wall. Again play was delayed; but when Dedryck came back on the pitch he looked a bit groggy and that state led probably to a clumsy challenge in the area on Ryan McGreevy and the referee had no choice but to award a penalty which Adam Barton converted.

The game certainly did not hold any punches as Preston took quite an aggressive stance and after Preston's Phil Appiah was booked he was substituted for his own good before he was sent off.

City started the second half very brightly with John Guidetti and Redshaw combining well but putting their efforts wide. City again had the ball in the back of the net in the fifty sixth minute but was ruled offside again. A minute later however Preston gifted City a goal when Guidetti was marshaling the ball behind for a corner was ceremoniously bundled over by Neal Trotman with a big push right on the edge of inside the area. Redshaw took a few steps before firing into the top right of the goal to level things up.

City looked the busier of the two teams as they chased the win; but did not create any decent chances for a while. Indeed with three minutes remaining Preston nearly snatched it themselves when Danny Mayor's out swinging cross straightened up and swerved towards goal that James Wood did well to save.

City had the last laugh however when in the ninety second minute Adrian Cieslewicz fed a good ball into the feet of Redshaw who saw Mak running into space and he fired across Murphy and he could not hold onto the wet ball as it lodged itself into the far corner of the goal.

That victory leaves City well placed in the league with a few games in hand on most teams and look to be in with a shot at challenging for the(north/midlands) title once again.

Stoke Game Postponed

Against Us - Portsmouth Away!

I bet the youth team wish they were able to collect air/road miles for the youth cup as they have been drawn away yet again; this time to Portsmouth in the fourth round of the competition. City have had to travel to West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Millwall, Reading, Bristol City, Plymouth Argyle, Sunderland, Chelsea, Swansea City and now Portsmouth in the last four seasons.

Maybe this amazing statistic has strengthened the young lads even further and allowed them to make the final twice in three of those previous three seasons. Portsmouth are sitting midway in their acedemy group with stats of played 13; won 5, drawn 3 and lost 5. So certainly they should not be underestimated. Portsmouth progressed to the fourth round by beating Gillingham at home two one. A date has yet to be set; but with a free weekend for the academy next weekend City may try to arrange the game before Christmas while they are still in the swing of things as the Christmas break can occasionally make the team a little sluggish and easier to cramp up near the end of the game.

Third Straight Win Past Middlesbrough

MCFC Reserves 3 - 1 MFC Reserves

Manchester City recorded their third straight win with a victory over Middlesbrough to move to within a point of Sunderland after they were held to a goalless draw tonight away to Everton. Goals from David Ball, a direct free kick from Paul Marshall and a fine strike from Adam Clayton were enough to seal victory with Ben Mee scoring an own goal for Middlesbrough.

City started brightly by scoring the opening goal in the third minute when David Ball forced his way down the left before cutting inside and then unleashing a shot that cannoned off Jason Steele in the Middlesbrough goal but somehow the ball went past him and over the line.

Within thirty seconds of the restart Middlesbrough were very nearly level had we not just witnesses a catastrophic miss by Middlesbrough's Josh Walker when he skied a James Cronesberry cross from three yards out at the far post.

Adam Clayton was forcing the City team forward at every opportunity and one strong run on the break from the edge of the City area very nearly ended in a great chance; but despite having a player either side of him he took the option to shoot and the defender was able to get the block in in the eighteenth minute.

Middlesbrough again nearly equalized in the thirty first minute when the ball was able to get forward on the right and Graeme Owens was given a little bit of space to allow him to get a decent curling shot that Tobias Johansen could only parry into the danger area that was only just cleared.

City doubled their lead a minute before the break when Clayton's midfield partner Paul Marshall also made a penetrating run straight through the centre of the pitch but was brought down five yards outside the area. The confident Paul stepped up with only one stride to thrust the ball into the top corner of the goal past a diving Steele to give a good climax to the end of the first half.

Five minutes after the break City made it three and probably sealed the result of the match with it. Vladimir Weiss had broke down the right and sent in a deep cross that Ball was able to head downwards onto the edge of the area where Clayton ran in and fired past Steele into the far corner of the goal.

That third goal however led to City kind of switching off which enabled Middlesbrough to get back into the game much more. So it was not much of a surprise when they pulled a goal back in the fifty eighth minute. Cronesberry was allowed too much space down the left and he sent an out swinging cross into the far post that Mee lost his composure with and miss-hit or sliced the ball past Johansen into the far corner of the goal.

City could have restored that three goal advantage within a minute when Steele made a poor clearance that cannoned of their own defender and fell to the path of Ball; but he redeemed himself with a fine save from Ball's shot.

Weiss who had improved in the second half slightly; was able to make good progress down the right as he tormented the defenders with his movement and persistence as he regained possession twice and on that second time fired in a fine cross straight across the goal that Ball could not quite connect with.

City now face a break until the beginning of January when they face Everton at home. But despite not looking too convincing at the start of the season there have been some real improvements from a few players that have seen us win seven of the ten games played and go into the second half of the season with a realistic chance at challenging for the title if they keep this form up.

City: T Johansen(GK), Mee, McGivern, Onuoha(Vidal 61), McDonald(Capt.), Clayton, Weiss, Marshall, D Ball, Daly, Morris.

Subs: Hartley(GK), Obeng, Ramsey.

Boro: Steele(GK), McMahon, Grounds(Corker 80), Walker, Hines, Bates, Owens, Smallwood, Martin, Porritt(Furness 66), Cronesberry.

Subs: Knight(GK), Robinson, Otte.

Manchester United Not Up To City Standards

MUFC U18s 0 - 2 MCFC U18s

The first academy derby was held at Manchester United's Carrington training ground and this means that third place United are now eleven points behind City after fourteen games for City and thirteen for United. City's two goals both came in the first half four minutes apart with Abdi Ibrahim scoring the first with a header and Robbi Mak firing in his fourteenth competitive goal of the season; thirteenth in the league.

On a lovely sunny winters day, the playing surface and conditions were perfect for the bragging rights in Manchester. Both sides seemed to lack any real cutting edge in the opening quarter of an hour but it was City that settled the quicker and started to press United back.

City made that pressure count in the thirty fourth minute when good work by Captain Kieran Trippier on the right found midfielder Andrew Tutte who whipped in a fine cross into the penalty area where Ibrahim timed his run to perfection and headed the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.

City's second goal was all about Robbie Mak who picked the ball up on just over the half way line and powered his way forward with other City players who made decoy runs and so the United defence opened up for Mak as he ran into the box and shot hard and low into the far corner of the goal.

The second half saw United play a lot better and force City back a lot more; but their lack of real quality up front was not enough to really test the quality of City's back four or force Joe Clegg in City's goal into a decent save.

Second placed Liverpool won three nil at home against West Brom today and so they are still seven points behind City. However Liverpool play Manchester United at home next week which if the score ends in a draw could quite effectively hand City the title.

City: Clegg(GK), Trippier(Capt.), Cunningham, Wabara, Boyata, Tutte, Benali(Elabadellaoiu 86), Ibrahim, Mak(Redshaw 90), Nimley-Tchuimeni, Chantler.

Subs: E. Johansen(GK), Tse, Cieslewicz.

The U16s did not fair as well as United won that game 2-1 after City had taken the lead.
