Reserves win at Robins

Reserves win at Robins

Altrincham 1 – 3  MCFC Reserves

With much movement of the backroom staff at City over the summer, the reserve team now have the distinction of being managed by former academy coach Frankie Bunn now that Steve Wigley has taken on his first team role. Frankie could not of asked for a much better start either as the team played really well in their first outing together. All four goals came in the first half with a brace from Daniel Sturridge and the third from Kelvin Etuhu. This was after Altrincham had taken an early lead through big city fan and local boy Colin Little who embarrassed Kasper Schmeichel after he fumbled a cross from a free kick into Colin’s path.

Considering that neither Nathan D’Laryea and Gary Breen had not partnered each other in defence they seemed to strike an instant accord with each other and kept a strong back line. Lets hope the onlooking Stuart Pearce and Steve Wigley saw this as Nathan is by far a better centre half than Matthew Mills has shown us so far. But I fear that Steve and Stuart might try to save face by continuing to play Mills even though at this early stage we seemed to have bought an ugly duckling that does not have the ability to turn into a swan.

They could however not fail to see how both Sturridge and Kelvin are progressing as a strike partnership with both showing that they have made another leap forward over the summer.

City fielded a trialist called Piers Bowman, but it was all academic for the lad as city had no intentions of taking the trial any further and to be fair he did not give them any need to change their minds during the sixty three minutes he played.

Joe Hart came on in the second half to replace Kasper in goals for his reserve debut, but good defending meant he had little to do during his forty five minute spell.

City travel to their old home stomping ground, Hyde United, for their annual pre-season fixture next Saturday; where the team might be even younger as the likes of Joe Hart, Willo Flood and Marc Laird will probably be travelling with the squad to China.

City: Schmeichel(GK)(Hart 46), Logan(Obeng 80), Williamson, D’Laryea, Breen, Johnson, Flood(Moore 70), Laird(Williams 80), Etuhu, Sturridge(C Evans 76), Bowman(Grimes 63).

Att: 864

MotM: Sturridge – Scored a good brace and set up Kelvin’s goal.
